Scholarship
Awards for
Undergraduate College Students
For
the academic year 2009/10, the Swiss Benevolent Society of
Chicago (SBS)
will make available scholarship awards for undergraduate college students
of Swiss descent. Awards will be distributed to the schools
qualifying
students will attend in 2009/10. Awards are for tuition only. Financial
need not being a requirement, all candidates will be judged
on academic
merit only. (Preference will be given to applicants pursuing their first
undergraduate degree.)
CRITERIA
- The applicant
must be either a Swiss National with permanent US residency permit
or of Swiss descent with documents of proof. Family genealogies are
not accepted as proof since they usually only indicate places of birth,
not places of origin (Heimatort) or a place of citizenship.
- The applicant
must reside permanently in the state of Illinois or Southern Wisconsin
(Dane, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Kenosha, LaFayette, Milwaukee,
Ozoukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties
only). Swiss students studying in the US on a student or visitor's
visa are not eligible.
- The applicant
must indicate intent to attend college on a full-time basis
for the
entire 2009/10 school year.
- High
School seniors:
The applicant must meet or exceed exam scores of 26 ACT or
equivalent SAT. In addition to the completed application, the applicant
must
supply an officially signed and filled-out High School transcript,
including the 2007 fall term. IMPORTANT: The transcript must show
a cumulative
grade point average (GPA), class rank, and test scores.
- College
Freshmen:
The
applicant must meet or exceed exam scores of 26 ACT or equivalent
SAT. The
applicant must supply, in addition to the completed application,
the official ACT
or equivalent SAT scores and a university/college
transcript with a minimum opf 3.3 grade point average (GPA on
a scale of 4 = A). It must contain information through December 31,
2008.
- Sophomores
and Juniors:
The applicant must supply, in addition to the completed application,
an official transcript for all course work completed at all institutions
attended. The university/college transcript must show a minimum
of 3.3 grade point average (GPA on a scale of 4 = A).
It must contain information through December 31, 2008.
- Each applicant
will be required to write a composition on a topic outlined in the
application form.
- All academic
credentials must be sent directly by the respective school administrations
to the Education Committee.
All scholarship
applications will be examined, analyzed, and ranked. Incomplete documentation
establishing Swiss descent, academic standing or eligibility will result
in disqualification. The decisions of the SBS Education Committee are
final.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
Completed forms
and all other materials mentioned above must be postmarked no later
than April 15, 2009. Late entries will not be considered. Winners
will be notified after June 15, 2009.
